Growth Rates and Explosions in Sandpiles

چکیده
We study the abelian sandpile growth model, where n particles are added at the origin on a stable background configuration in Z. Any site with at least 2d particles then topples by sending one particle to each neighbor. We find that with constant background height h ≤ 2d − 2, the diameter of the set of sites that topple has order n. This was previously known only for h < d. Our proof uses a strong form of the least action principle for sandpiles, and a novel method of background modification. We can extend this diameter bound to certain backgrounds in which an arbitrarily high fraction of sites have height 2d − 1. On the other hand, we show that if the background height 2d − 2 is augmented by 1 at an arbitrarily small fraction of sites chosen independently at random, then adding finitely many particles creates an explosion (a sandpile that never stabilizes).

Relationships Between Seedling Growth Rate and Yield of Maize Cultivars Under Normal and Water Stress Conditions
Abstract Effects of water stress on root and leaf growth rates and their relationships with yield under normal and water stress conditions were examined at the Greenhouse and Research Field of Faculty of Agriculture, Kerman University, Iran, using seven maize cultivars including SC-404, SC-704, BC-666, TC-647, DC-370, Jeta and Kordona. During a period of 14 days, water stress at -0.4 MPa was ...
متن کاملAn estimation of growth parameter, mortality rates and yield-per-recruit for beluga (Huso huso) living in Caspian Sea
This paper presents the results of study on age, growth, mortality rates and yield-per-recruit of Beluga (Huso huso) living in Caspian Sea. The mean length of successive years, mortality rates and yield-per-recruit studies indicated that at present the resource is under heavy fishing pressure. For the female Beluga growth was regarded as comprising of three stages, and the von Bertalanffy param...
متن کاملCrystal size distribution in metamorphic rocks: an example for the relationship between nucleation and growth rates with overstepping
Crystal size distribution (CSD) in metamorphic rocks provide fundamental information about crystal nucleation and growth rate, growth time and the degree of overstepping. CSD data for garnet, staurolite, kyanite and andalusite crystals from the aureole demonstrate that the earliest formed of these minerals, garnet, has the highest population density and the shortest growth time. The last formed...
متن کاملBehavior of coupled automata.
We study the nature of statistical correlations that develop between systems of interacting self-organized critical automata (sandpiles). Numerical and analytical findings are presented describing the emergence of "synchronization" between sandpiles and the dependency of this synchronization on factors such as variations in coupling strength, toppling rule probabilities, symmetric versus asymme...
متن کاملNumerical Study of Spherical Vapor Layer Growth Due to Contact of a Hot Object and Water
Vapor film formation and growth due to contact of a hot body and other liquids arise in some industrial applications including nuclear fuel rods, foundry and production of paper. The possibility of a steam explosion remains in most of these cases which could result in injuries and financial damage. Due to the importance of such phenomenon, this study deals with vapor layer forming, growth, and ...
